A $105-million project to renovate the iconic Astrodome in Houston now has a start date. Upgrades are scheduled to begin in spring 2019. Ryan Walsh, with the Harris County Sports & Convention Corp,. told the Houston Business Journal that “redevelopment of the Astrodome in earnest” will begin following the conclusion of the Houston Rodeo 2019 show.
The renovation is anticipated to take approximately 20 months, and will include raising the Astrodome floor 30 feet to ground level, which will include more than 500,000 square feet of rentable space, as well as 1,400 parking spaces. The processes, to date, for the property on the southwest side has focused on site cleanup. The third and final phase of asbestos abatement is scheduled to begin shortly, and will last approximately four months.
