AstraZeneca Plans $1-Billion Spend to Grow Massachusetts Presence

AstraZeneca plans to spend $1 billion to grow its workforce in Massachusetts by 50% over the coming years. The UK-based biopharmaceutical company has just opened a 570,000-square-foot R&D center in Cambridge’s Kendall Square, building on its oexisting presence in Cambridge and Boston.

Together with its site for genomic medicine at 100 Binney St., the new AstraZeneca R&D Center Kendall Square at 290 Binney St. will be home to nearly 2,000 researchers and scientists who will accelerate the company’s oncology, cell therapy, chronic disease and rare disease pipeline. It includes ten floors of interconnecting laboratories.

Pascal Soriot, CEO, AstraZeneca, said: “Kendall Square is a leading innovation ecosystem, and it is one of the key locations where AstraZeneca will discover the next generation of scientific breakthroughs. Our new R&D center not only reflects AstraZeneca’s long-term commitment to Massachusetts but also our belief in delivering U.S.-led innovation to patients around the world.”
