A’s Propose ‘Jewel Box’ Ballpark on Oakland Waterfront, Coliseum Site Redev Too
The Oakland A’s unveiled plans to build a next-generation urban ballpark at Howard Terminal on Oakland’s waterfront. The A’s also plan to pursue a second project to redevelop the Coliseum site into a mixed-use project.
The new privately-financed stadium envisions returning a baseball experience from the roots of the sport, while reimagining the stadium as a “ballpark within a park.” The intimate stadium is nestled carefully into its urban surroundings and will anchor a new, vibrant, waterfront district, featuring housing, restaurants, retail, small business space, and public gathering spaces.
Plans call for total seating capacity of around 34,000, that are arranged in the closest configuration possible to home plate. An elevated park wraps and frames the bowl, coming down to meet the waterfront. The ballpark is set to open in 2023.
Preliminary plans for the existing Coliseum site include a new large park, surrounded by new housing, community gathering space, office, retail and restaurants. The park will be anchored by two focal points: Oracle Arena, repurposed as a concert and cultural events center; and the original Coliseum baseball diamond, preserved to inspire the next generation of ballplayers.
