Army Corps of Engineers Gives Final Sign-Off on Gateway Tunnel Project

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has signed off on the Gateway Tunnel project, providing the final federal approval needed to construct a new rail tunnel between New Jersey and Penn Station New York and rehabilitate the existing ones, according to the Gateway Development Commission. Construction on the project, the first new rail tunnel between the two states since 1910, could begin as early as 2023, according to published reports.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said, “This step brings us much closer to the beginning of construction on the Hudson Tunnel Project, which is part of the single-largest critical infrastructure effort in the nation.”

Murphy’s counterpart in New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul, said, ““The Gateway project will help support the economic prosperity of New York and the rest of the country for years to come, which is why we need to get this project right and get it moving.”
