Arizona’s Tallest Tower Approved in Downtown Phoenix

Scottsdale-based Empire Group’s Aspirant Development division received City Council approval to move forward on Astra Phoenix, a mixed-use multifamily and hotel project in downtown Phoenix. The project is planned for two towers, one reaching 535 feet, which would make it the tallest building in Arizona, as well as another 380-foot tower.

Site Elevation

Planned for 403-units of housing and 224 hotel rooms, the 2.8-acre site at Second Avenue and Van Buren Street is next to the Downtown YMCA and currently houses a parking lot. The architect of the mixed-use project is Solomon Cordwell Buenz.

A 20-foot wide Taylor Street pedestrian paseo crosses the site between the two towers. It serves to connect pedestrians from 7th Avenue to 1st Avenue and provides access to Civic Space Park and the Central Station Transit Center.

Chase Tower is currently the tallest building in Arizona. The 483-foot tall tower was built in 1972 and is located at 201 N. Central Ave.
