Apple’s Redevelopment Plans for Historic Los Angeles Theater Emerge

Apple plans to open a store in the 1920s-era Tower Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. Though the Cupertino, CA-based company operates more than 500 stores, the location at 802 S. Broadway will be distinct.

First, the company plans to maintain the Broadway Theater District facility’s historic structural integrity. Second, the technology giant envisions converting the space into a retail outlet, as well as a performance space. That may foreshadow Apple’s intent to play a bigger role as a major Hollywood content creator.

Details of the transformation of the cinema, which closed in 1988 due to declining downtown movie audiences, were revealed by the company, which expects to file redevelopment plans with the city this week. Apple’s BJ Siegel told the L.A. Times the Tower Theatre will be “in the upper echelon of what Apple does. It very much differs from the other Apple stores you see in L.A.”
