Apple Makes $200M Investment in Kentucky Plant
Connect Industrial is heading to Chicago, June 28th. Here’s where to get more details and register.
Apple plans to invest $200 million in a Harrodsburg, KY manufacturing plant operated by Corning Inc. The facility, roughly 30 miles southwest of Lexington, produces Gorilla Glass, a glass-ceramic hybrid that is used in all iPhones and iPads.
Corning collaborated with Apple to develop the initial version of Gorilla Glass, which is stronger and lighter than plastic-coated screens previously used on smartphones. The investment will support Corning’s R&D, capital equipment needs and state-of-the-art glass processing.
The companies say the capital will help ensure the 65-year-old Kentucky plant “remains a global center of excellence for glass technology.” It is the first investment being made by Apple’s newly-formed Advanced Manufacturing Fund, which seeks to foster innovation among American manufacturers.
