Apollo Theater Sets Free Concert to Mark Post-Pandemic Reopening
The Apollo Theater is celebrating its reopening after being closed since last year due to New York’s emergency pandemic restrictions with a free star-studded concert next weekend, the New York Daily News reported. Tickets for the event will be available August 23 on the storied Harlem music venue’s website. Proof of vaccination is required.
Nona Hendryx, Bishop Hezekiah Walker and the Nat Adderley Jr. Quintet will headline the Aug. 28 concert. The venue hosted a live performance by Jennifer Hudson this past Friday.
Jonelle Procope, CEO of the Apollo, said the extravaganza would be a potent sign that New York’s performing arts scene is on a path to recovery after being knocked down by the pandemic.
“It signals to the world that New York is back and Harlem is back,” Procope told the Daily News. “The Apollo is one of the most important symbols of the city that never sleeps.”
