Annova LNG Tapping into Renewables for Brownsville Terminal

Annova LNG, the liquified natural gas company headquartered in Houston, wants to power its proposed export terminal at the Port of Brownsville with renewable sources, such as wind and solar. The company signed a facilities agreement to buy 405 megawatts of power from the South Texas Electric Cooperative (in Victoria) and Magic Valley Electric Cooperative (in Pharr).

Annova’s Omar Khayum said the agreement would complement plans to use electric motors which, in turn, would reduce noise and emissions from the plant. “When we come online, we’ll be the lowest carbon-emitting LNG facility in the world per unit of production,” he said in an interview.

Still, Annova LNG and two other projects are facing opposition from Rio Grande Valley shrimpers, fishermen, environmentalists and communities. The projects are still waiting on permit decisions, but environmental reviews expressed concern about cumulative traffic, noise and habitat fragmentation they would have on endangered species in the area.
