Animal Shelter Slated for Expansion – Finally

The Pflugerville Animal Shelter at 1600 Waterbrook Dr. needs more room. However, two years after a bond to fund the shelter didn’t pass, the shelter could finally be on its way toward expansion, especially a new intake building. Pflugerville, located north of Austin, has budgeted $2 million for the project, with $1.6 million of funding coming from certificates of obligation, and $400,000 from the city fund reserves.

The reason for the interest? The shelter’s current animal intake building isn’t up to the the Texas Department of State Health Services’ rabies and zoonosis standards.

The shelter inherited the current facility, which was once used by other city departments. Once construction begins on a new intake building, and other expansion works, it will “be the first building that’s designed as a shelter,” Shelter Director Rhonda McLendon told the Austin American-Statesman.

The city will open bidding for the project by late August 2017.
