Amtrak Considering Frequent San Antonio-Austin Service

With the Lone Star Rail project falling apart in October, communities along the growing Interstate 35 corridor needed to find another transportation plan to help reduce travel time between San Antonio and Austin. Amtrak could have a solution to the issue.

The national rail system is conducting a feasibility study to determine what it will cost to improve the current Union Pacific tracks on which it currently travels. Amtrak currently operates one daily trip each way between San Antonio and Austin – but the two-hour ride  is too long for commuters. Amtrak is putting together a ridership and revenue study.

According to San Antonio Council Member Ray Lopez (who chairs the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization), a potential route would start in South San Antonio, near the Texas A&M campus. The northern-most terminal would be in Georgetown, north of Austin.
