America’s Largest Ice Battery Will Cool Old Main Post Office
Using North America’s largest ice battery, Enwave North America and The 601W Companies are partnering to cool Chicago’s old main post office, which 601W is redeveloping. “Working with Enwave provides owners and future tenants with a number of advantages, including a higher level of reliability and redundancy” compared to on-site chillers, said Greg Prather at JLL, which is managing the project.
New York-based 601W recently began transforming the vacant two-block-long building, which dates from the 1920s, into 2.8 million square feet of class A office space and amenities. “601W has exciting plans for The Post Office that will likely stimulate additional development in the area,” said Jim Rylowicz of Enwave Chicago.
Enwave Chicago will phase in chilled-water service to the building starting in the spring, and projects full service a year later. The company already serves 48 million square feet of building space from five interconnected plants across the city.
