American Express Nears Deal for Lease at Long-Delayed 2 World Trade Center

American Express is close to a deal to relocate its headquarters from nearby 200 Vesey St. to Silverstein Properties’ long-delayed 2 World Trade Center, Bloomberg News reported. The financial services firm’s commitment could represent the anchor tenancy needed to begin construction.

Published reports first surfaced in September 2024 that AmEx and Silverstein were in discussions about space at 2 WTC. It’s not clear how much space AmEx would lease at the new tower, nor how large 2 WTC would end up being.

Any deal would likely need approval from the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, the owner of the land at the World Trade Center site, a source told Bloomberg.

2 WTC would be the final major office property in the redevelopment of the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Construction has been on hold since 2016, when News Corp. and 21st Century Fox scrapped plans to move there.
