AMC Theatres Goes Dark for at Least 6 to 12 Weeks

Leawood, KS-based AMC Theatres, the nation’s largest theatrical exhibition company, has closed all 630 U.S. locations for at least six to 12 weeks. The company said the move was made in compliance with directives from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, as well as state and local authorities, because of the coronavirus epidemic.

“We are ever so disappointed for our movie-going guests and for our employee teams that the new CDC guidelines that Americans should not gather in groups larger than 10 people make it impossible to open our theatres,” said AMC CEO Adam Aron. “Still, the health and well-being of AMC guests and employees, and of all Americans, takes precedence above all else.”

AMC said it would continue to monitor the situation closely, and the company will remain flexible on reopening. The company is the largest of several national and regional theatre chains to close during the epidemic.
