Amazon is choosing a few dozen employees to test a 30-hour workweek program. These employees will come from both within and outside of the company to try working Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., plus flex hours . If all goes well, having such a massive company initiate this concept could help prompt other global companies to reconsider their employees’ schedules.
While those testing the program will still receive the same benefits as full-time employees, their salaries will be less than their full-time counterparts, but they’ll have the option to work full-time. A while back, the e-commerce giant came under scrutiny for an article that purported their employees work 80-hour weeks with no vacation, but Amazon’s senior Vice President Jay Carney deemed it a misrepresentation.
The pilot program could help increase the female employment at the company, where 76% of management positions are filled by males. Additionally, this schedule could help promote a more diverse workforce.
