Amazon Unveils First Full-Sized Grocery Store in Seattle
Amazon unwrapped its inaugural checkout-free grocery store in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Amazon Go Grocery occupies a 10,400-square-foot space at 610 E. Pike St., between Belmont and Boylston avenues.
The full-sized store – billed as Just Walk Out Shopping – is a larger version of the Amazon Go stores launched in 2018. The stores use sophisticated cameras and data technology that automatically detects and records customers’ purchases through an app, which eliminates the need for cashiers. Amazon Go Grocery’s inventory of roughly 5,000 items includes fresh produce, liquor, meat, seafood, pre-made meals, fresh-baked breads and pastries, and local specialties.
The smaller Go store typically stocks about 1,000 items and targets customers in urban CBD’s looking for breakfast, lunch and snacks. Amazon’s Cameron Janes told the Seattle Times, the Amazon Go Grocery, by contrast, will have “everything you’d expect to find in a neighborhood market.”
