Amazon Tops 53,500 Seattle Employees, Launches Nationwide Hiring Push

Amazon’s head count in Seattle has eclipsed 53,500 employees, and its Puget Sound payroll hit $9 billion last year. That pushed the giant e-commerce company’s local employment past Microsoft, which had 51,854 employees in the Puget Sound. Boeing is the largest private employer in the state with 69,830 employees.

This week, Amazon, which is celebrating its 25th year, rolled out a new hiring initiative that seeks to fill 10,000 openings in the Seattle area by 2020, as well as another 20,000 jobs nationwide. The majority of that hiring is for new positions. Job fairs are planned next week in Seattle and in five other cities.

The growth of Amazon reflects the Puget Sound’s economic rise, diversity and prosperity, as well as serves to reinforce is challenges, including housing and transportation infrastructure. Amazon says its economic contributions include $111.2 billion to regional gross domestic product since 2010, and support of 14.5% of jobs in the region.
