Amazon to Vacate SLU Building

Amazon’s continued expansion to the Eastside markets of Bellevue and Redmond is translating to a reduction of occupancy in Seattle. The e-commerce company is not renewing a lease at American Realty Advisors’ 2201 Westlake Ave. in Seattle’s South Lake Union submarket.

Amazon had leased 180,000 square feet at the 12-story, 317,000-square-foot office building developed by Vulcan Real Estate in 2009 at the bustling corner of Westlake Ave. N and Denny Way. The mixed-use project also encompasses a 135-unit condominium project, 25,000 square feet of street-level retail, subterranean parking and open green space.

Amazon confirmed the decision last week that it would let the lease expire at 2201 Westlake at the end of the year. The roughly 1,000 human resources employees based there will be shifted to other offices in its Puget Sound campus. The company said the move is part of a regional growth strategy designed to provide employees with more flexibility where they work.
