Amazon Purchases GW’s Ashburn Campus for $427M
George Washington University has sold its 122-acre Virginia Science and Technology Campus in Ashburn to Amazon Data Services for approximately $427 million.
The deal allows for the construction of a new data or information technology center on the property, as part of Amazon’s pledge to invest $35 billion in Virginia data centers by 2040. The company already has multiple data centers in Northern Virginia, including in Ashburn, Sterling, Manassas, Haymarket and Chantilly.
Under the terms of the agreement, the school can keep using the campus for up to five years. The programs housed on the Ashburn campus include nursing, engineering, physics and chemistry, and the site is also home to research labs and administrative buildings.
“The proceeds from the endowment will be used to make strategic investments in our research and teaching missions and to increase resources available for student financial aid,” said Ellen M. Granberg, President of George Washington University.
