Amazon Poised to Buy Central Steel Site on Southwest Side

Amazon is adding two more properties to its Chicago distribution network, leasing a warehouse in west suburban Winfield and agreeing to buy the big Central Steel & Wire plant on the Southwest Side, Crain’s Chicago Business reported, citing the Chicago Tribune.

The Seattle-based retailer would pay about $45 million to Ryerson Holding to acquire the steel site in the Southwest Side’s Gage Park. It spans 70 acres, enough to accommodate a 1.5-million-square-foot building, the current size of the Central Steel plant, the Tribune reported.

Amazon also plans to open a distribution center in an industrial building in Winfield, recently signing a 141,000-square-foot lease there with Conor Commercial, the developer of the property.

The Tribune report didn’t provide specifics about Amazon plans for the Central Steel property. However, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed to Crain’s that the company had committed to the Winfield facility.
