Amazon Plans Next-Gen Warehouses in Chicago’s South Suburbs

Amazon plans to build two new fulfillment centers in the south suburbs of Cook County, featuring the e-commerce giant’s robotics technologies along with adding 1,000 jobs each. The new fulfillment centers will be located in Matteson and Markham.

“I’m committed to making Illinois a leader and placing us among the most forward-thinking and innovative states in the country,” said Gov. J.B. Pritzker. “I’m excited to see Amazon increasing their presence here in Illinois and creating thousands of much-needed jobs.”

Amazon’s Mike Flannery said the facilities in Matteson and Markham would be the first of their kind. “Future employees will work alongside Amazon’s most innovative robotic technology to safely and efficiently pick, pack, and ship smaller customer orders such as books, electronics, toys, and household goods,” he said. “We anticipate both buildings will launch in time for the 2021 holiday.”

Amazon reportedly also plans a facility on Chicago’s South Side.
