Amazon Plans $140M Fulfillment Center Near Detroit
Amazon is planning a $140-million fulfillment center in Romulus, MI, a suburb 20 miles southwest of Detroit. The facility is expected to create 1,600 new jobs, and Amazon is seeking a $5-million business development grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund.
A site for the facility has not yet been officially revealed, though the city’s planning commission reviewed and approved zoning changes for a development code-named Project Mercury. The 84.7-acre site indicated in the documents is proposed to house an 857,000-square-foot facility on Ecorse Road off the Detroit Industrial Expressway, near Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. Planning documents describe a project consistent with other Amazon facilities.
Amazon considered other sites in the Midwest and Canada for construction of a modern fulfillment center. The online retail giant is also investing $90 million to convert a former General Motors Co. bumper plating factory in Livonia, MI into a regional distribution warehouse.
