Amazon Going Solar at 15 Fulfillment Centers

Seattle-headquartered Amazon Inc. announced plans to install large-scale solar systems on the rooftops of 15 of its fulfillment centers in 2017. It’s estimated that the installations completed by the end of the year will generate up to 41 megawatts (MW) of power. The ecommerce retailer’s ultimately goal is to have solar systems deployed on 50 centers worldwide by 2020.

The facilities targeted for the solar systems are in California, Delaware, Maryland, Nevada and New Jersey. Depending on time of year and additional factors, a solar installation could generate as much as 80% of a single fulfillment facility’s annual energy needs.

“As our fulfillment network continues to expand, we want to help generate more renewable energy at both existing and new facilities around the world in partnership with community and business leaders,” said Amazon’s Dave Clark.
