Amazon Expands into Convenience Store Sector
Amazon.com plans to introduce convenience stores and curbside pickup locations over the coming year. The Seattle-based online retailer is seeking to expand deeper into the lucrative grocery store sector.
The company plans to build small brick-and-mortar stores that will offer produce, milk, meats and other perishable items for consumers to take home. For other goods with longer shelf lives, Amazon will offer same-day delivery via mobile phones or in-store touch screens.
Amazon is also expected to roll out designated drive-in locations where online grocery orders can be picked up. Using license-plate reading technology Amazon hopes to expedite the process.
Initially, Amazon’s Fresh subscription service customers will have exclusive use of the grocery stores. Industry observers say it will be a “tricky” and expensive endeavor, given the complexities of handling perishable items, as well as the expensive refrigerated storage required.
