Amazon Earns Seattle Biggest Company Town in America Title

Seattle is the biggest company town in America, a position it achieved riding the explosive growth of Amazon. The giant e-commerce retailer now occupies 19% of all prime office space in the city, the most for any single employer in a major U.S. city.

Amazon ‘s 8.1-million-square-foot footprint is more than double the size of any other company in any other big city. By comparison, the second-largest major-city office tenant is Citi with 3.7 million square feet in New York, which represents less than 3% of Big Apple Class A space.

Adding up 40 of Seattle’s next biggest employers would equal the amount of space Amazon occupies. And Amazon is expected add more than 12 million square feet within five years.

In addition to its core business, e-commerce and cloud computing, Amazon’s growth has been fueled by diversification, a theme reflected in its recent acquisition of Whole Foods.
