Amazon Changes Mind About 720K-SF Rainier Square Lease in Seattle
Amazon.com Inc. is rethinking a lease in Seattle that played a central role in its head tax battle with the city last year. The online retail giant had planned to take occupancy of more than 720,000 square feet at the 58-story, 1.7-million-square-foot Rainier Square tower being built at 411 Union St., but now says it will sublease the space instead.
The company said in a statement, “We are currently building two million square feet of office space in our South Lake Union campus in Seattle. We are always evaluating our space requirements, and intend to sublease Rainier Square based on current plans. We have more than 9,000 open roles in Seattle and will continue to evaluate future growth.”
Amazon has more than 45,000 employees in Seattle, and occupies roughly a fifth of the city’s prime office space. The Seattle shift follows the company’s announcement that it was scrapping plans to open a HQ2 in New York last month.
