Amazon-Backed Apartment Complex in Central District Breaks Ground

Acer House, a 121-unit affordable housing development in Seattle’s Central District, officially broke ground recently.

The project is backed by a $12.6 million below-market-rate loan from Amazon, part of the company’s Housing Equity Fund, which aims to preserve and create more than 35,000 affordable homes in the Puget Sound, National Capital, and Nashville regions.

Acer House is a mixed-use development designed to be inclusive and to offer sustainable, affordable housing, reported the Puget Sound Business Journal. Located at 2210 E. Cherry St., Acer House is designed as an Afro-futurist building and aims to serve Seattle’s Black community. Originally announced in 2020, the five-and-a-half-story project faced permitting delays. Total development costs are estimated at $44 million.

Developers Urban Black and Great Expectations are partnering on the project. Rush Construction is the builder, and Integrated Design Engineers and TCC Associates are the engineers. Urbal Architecture, Schemata Workshop and Donald King FAIA designed the project.
