Amarillo Says “Yes” to School of Veterinary Medicine

The Amarillo (TX) city council approved an amendment to a 2016 agreement between the Texas Tech University System and Amarillo Economic Development Corp. The amendment allows the AEDC to provide up to $69 million for construction of the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo. The new school will be situated on the campus of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center/Amarillo, and will create 95 new direct jobs, and more than 270 indirect jobs.

The TTU SVM will be the only veterinary school in the country to be on the same campus as a pharmacy and medical school. The school will also address the critical shortage of veterinarians serving rural communities by eliminating a teaching hospital and, instead, partnering with local and regional veterinarians. The project has drawn industry-wide support from organizations including Texas Cattle Feeders Association, Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association, and the Texas Farm Bureau.
