Mass Pike in Allston Receives $335M Federal Grant
Massachusetts and Boston have secured $335.4 million in federal funding to advance the I-90 straightening project in Allston, MA. Spearheaded by U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, the grant from the Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods program is a significant step toward the $1.9 billion overhaul, aiming to enhance transit, unlock riverside property, and stimulate economic growth.
The project entails replacing the aging viaduct with a ground-level Pike, facilitating new development and reconnecting the Harvard-owned Beacon Park Yard to Allston. Harvard’s ongoing development plans and the creation of a West Station with commuter rail and bus services are central to the transformation, promising economic, transit, and environmental benefits.
“The Allston Multimodal Project is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve transportation infrastructure in the Allston community and better connect residents across the state with housing and job opportunities,” said Gov. Maura Healey.
