Alderman Nixes Related Midwest’s Plan for Spire Site

It’s back to the drawing board for Related Midwest after Ald. Brendan Reilly rejected the developer’s plan to put up two residential towers at 400 N. Lake Shore Dr., the former Chicago Spire site. In an email to constituents, the 42nd Ward alderman cited concerns about traffic, the tall podium on which the towers would be built, security along the river and a proposed hotel use, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Related Midwest said in a statement that the company “deeply values the feedback from Alderman Reilly and the Streeterville community regarding our proposal” for the Spire site, undeveloped since the 2008 financial crisis.

“We will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders to refine our plan and move forward with a design that realizes the potential of this site – and adjacent areas like DuSable Park – in a way that maximizes benefits for neighbors, residents and the greater Chicago community.”
