Albany Plans $25M Makeover for Government Complex

New York’s Office of General Services (OGS) plans to spend $25 million to improve Empire State Plaza, a 98-acre complex of state government buildings in Albany, with the aim of creating a more active and accessible civic space.

Detailed in a report prepared for OGS by architecture and design studio WXY, the plan draws on input from over 2,000 participants and envisions major enhancements to the complex, including green space, improved wayfinding and navigation, upgrades to the visitor experience in the Concourse and the Plaza, and improvements to the Swan Street and Madison Avenue gateways to the Plaza.

The investment forms part of the $400 million Championing Albany’s Potential Initiative that Gov. Kathy Hochul launched last year in a bid to promote housing growth, attract new residents, and revitalize public spaces in New York’s capital city. OGS, the state’s real estate arm, oversaw the construction of the Plaza and has served as its caretaker since the complex was completed in 1978.
