Alamo Drafthouse Poised to Take Over Shuttered Bay Area Cinemas
Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is poised to take over two Bay Area theatre locations that went dark last month, according to published reports. The Austin-based operator is reportedly close to deals to reopen the former ShowPlace Icon theatres at San Antonio Center in Mountain View and Westfield Valley Fair in Santa Clara.
The San Francisco Business Times reportedly recently that Alamo had filed applications for full-service liquor licenses permitting food service and cocktails at both locations. The filings come just two months after Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired the chain for a reported $200 million from owners who had bought it out of bankruptcy in 2021.
The new locations would be Alamo’s third and fourth California locations. It operates a theatre in San Francisco’s Mission District and one in Downtown Los Angeles. Founded in 1997, the company also operates on the East Coast and in the Midwest along with eight Texas markets.
