Chicago is among a handful of large convention markets that are predicted to lag in recovery until 2025

AHR Expo Cancels 2021 McCormick Place Date

Cancellations at McCormick Place have now extended into events scheduled for 2021. The International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigeration (AHR) Expo, scheduled for January at the Near South Side convention facility, has been scrapped due to “roadblocks set in place by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and resulting current state and local restrictions that prohibit mass gatherings over 50 people,” show organizers announced.

Held at McCormick every three years, the AHR Expo will next be held in Las Vegas in 2022. Show organizers had worked with the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority to salvage a 2021 event. “We were hopeful that March would be a feasible solution, but there are too many obstacles that are beyond our control,” said show manager Mark Stevens.

Crain’s Chicago Business reported that 2020’s cancellations at McCormick have resulted in a $2-billion hit to Chicago’s economy. The AHR Expo normally brings about 60,000 attendees to town.
