Aerojet Rocketdyne Jets to Alabama
Aerojet Rocketdyne is heading for Huntsville, AL by the end of 2019. The aerospace and defense contractor plans to relocate or eliminate 1,100 of 1,400 positions at its Rancho Cordova, CA facilities.
The company owns roughly 6,500 acres near Sacramento, which is expected to be sold or developed. Last year, it shifted its HQ to SoCal to be closer to customers and partners in El Segundo, CA’s cluster of aerospace companies.
The company continues to “consolidate and optimize” operations, which is expected to save $230 million annually. The move to Alabama involves defense-related program management, engineers and related positions involved in building the next-generation rocket engine at a new production plant being built.
The rocket maker has had a presence in the Sacramento area since the early 1950s. At its peak in the 1960s, the company employed about 20,000. Roughly 300 people will remain in the region.
