Last summer and fall, workers lovingly repaired 24 monuments in New York City through the Adopt-A-Monument program from the Municipal Arts Society (MAS).

In October 2016, they cleaned the marbles at the Heinrich Heine Fountain in Joyce Kilmer Park on Grand Concourse in the Bronx. They also repaired joints and cracks that could lead to further damage to the landmark, created by sculptor Ernest Herter in 1899.

MAS also runs its Adopt-A-Mural program. Over the last 30 years, the MAS’s Adopt programs have raised $4 million to conserve 51 works of art. The fountain, for example, is maintained by a gift from the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation in 1999.
