Abbott Says No Cause for Alarm in Rising TX COVID Cases

Gov. Greg Abbott sought to assure Texans Tuesday as the state reported a new high in coronavirus cases, saying hospital beds remain plentiful and treatment options have improved.

He attributed Tuesday’s record high number of new cases — 2,622 — to certain counties reporting large batches of tests simultaneously, particularly from prisons and assisted living centers, which can skew statewide numbers.

Abbott also gave no indication that the increase in cases and hospitalizations would slow the pace of reopening the state’s economy, the Austin American-Statesman reported. He said his administration remained “laser focused” on maintaining abundant hospital capacity.

“We are in the middle of a short period of time where all of us have to coexist with COVID-19,” Abbott said. “This is going to continue to be the case for at least a few more months until we have medicines available” that can treat and prevent the disease.
