A Question of Productivity: Remote vs. Office Employees?

With the rise of creative offices and collaborative work stations, the question still begs: are remote employees more productive than the employees in an office?

According to a study performed by the Harvard Business Review, since 2008, the number of employees who say they can’t concentrate at their desk has increased by 16%. Additionally, there’s been a 13% increase in the number of office employees who say they don’t have a quiet place to do their work.

Another survey found that 86% of workers believe they’d hit their maximum productivity if they were working alone. While it may seem counterintuitive, remote work makes good team members because they can’t rely on close proximity in lieu of communication, but rather, they must stay highly communicative via video chat, email and phone calls. Remote workers also have the freedom to balance their personal needs with their work, designing their days efficiently to get both completed.

Creative offices with beer taps may be enticing, but who’s to say the coffee shop down the street isn’t more efficient?
