A New Historic District: Morningside Heights

A big piece of the Morningside Heights neighborhood in Upper Manhattan is now an historic district.

New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to create the district, which includes 115 buildings near the campus of Columbia University. More than half of the buildings date from 1900 to 1910, right after the subway opened in the neighborhood.

“The handsome pre-war apartment buildings create stunning streetscapes along Riverside Drive, Cathedral Parkway and Claremont Avenue,” said Commission Chair Meenakshi Srinivasan. The famously unfinished Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in Morningside Heights also received a landmark designation.
