A $20M Facelift for Chicago’s Fulton Market
The city of Chicago unveiled a $20-million plan to improve Chicago’s red-hot Fulton Market neighborhood. The facelift is scheduled to begin in March, with completion sometime next year. Improvements will include new pavement, improved lighting, and cobblestoned intersections.
But not everyone is onboard with the city’s plans. The Fulton Market Association, for one, said the last public meeting on the streetscape project took place in September 2015, when the city presented only draft designs. Though the city has briefed some individual landowners, “there’s been no meeting or public discussion since then,” said Roger Rominelli, the association’s executive director.
Rominelli also expressed concerns that the project, which will be financed with proceeds from a TIF, will pull funds from other unmet needs. The city said it wants to keep the area’s historic look, while making it easier to use, and more attractive.
