$85M Peaker Plant Gets Go Ahead Near Austin
Spanish-based power company Acciona is planning to build a 100 megawatt (MW) peaker plant with the hopes it will smooth out the states overburdened utility load. The $85 million plant will be located on 20 acres about 25 miles southeast of Austin. As part of the approval, Caldwell County voted to approve a 10-year property tax abatement for the large battery project (similar to the one pictured), according to the Austin Business Journal. Acciona will make a “payment in lieu” of an annual tax payment equal to 50% of those taxes. The project will bring in about $400,000 a year in annual tax revenue to the county.
Acciona aims to build the battery storage facility and associated infrastructure to store and transmit approximately 100 megawatts of electricity within Caldwell County. It would operate within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas Inc. market and have an operational project life of at least 30 years.
Documents estimate the project would create less than long-term 10 jobs, but as many as 50 construction jobs. It’s targeted to begin construction this year and open in 2025.
