Monument Status for 7,000-Acre Castner Range?
The Frontera Land Alliance, along with the El Paso Community Foundation and Franklin Mountain Wilderness Coalition introduced a comprehensive study containing historical and archeological sites in the Castner Range of West Texas. The three groups joined forces in hopes of obtaining federal national monument status for — and preventing residential and commercial development on — the 7,000-acre Castner Range, located just north of El Paso.
The fate of the range is in the hands of President Obama, who has the authority to designate the property as a national monument. Said U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke from El Paso: “What we don’t want is the development of Castner Range . . . what we want is preservation of the beautiful Chihuanhuan Desert landscape . . . and our heritage as Americans who came from this region.”
