70 MW Solar Farm to Power Tesla’s Gigafactory
Tesla announced plans to power its Nevada Gigafactory with a 70-megawatt solar farm. The company, which is building its new $5-billion factory in Sparks, NV, has also started production of battery cells at the facility.
Tesla’s goal is to consume no fossil fuels, and the company is claiming its solar array installation for its roof will be seven times larger than the world’s next largest solar installation. Excess power generated during the day will be stored by powerpack storage batteries for use at other times.
The solar panels will likely be produced by SolarCity, which Tesla acquired late last year.
