70-Acre MXU Makalapua Project District Unveiled
The Queen Liliuokalani Trust unveiled its plans to develop Makalapua Project District, a 70-acre, mixed-use project on Hawaii’s Big Island. The development in Kailua-Kona would feature 300 residential units, 220 rooms spread across two hotels, a 50,000-square-foot community performance facility and 470,000 square feet of commercial space, at a cost of $65 million.
The project is very much in the planning stage at this time, with the private trust only recently filing plans with the state Department of Health’s Office of Environmental Quality Control. If approved, the development would go north on land owned by the trust, which is northwest of Kailua Village, on the island’s west coast. The trust indicated that the project would “serve to meet the varied housing and commercial needs of the region, at an attractive growth location adjacent to Kailua-Kona.”
