650K-SF Mixed-Use Proposed for DC’s St. Elizabeths East

A roughly 650,000-square-foot, modern mixed-use project proposed for historic St. Elizabeths East in Washington, DC would create a new campus and community focal point as the District seeks to build on the momentum on the sprawling Ward 8 site, according to the Washington Business Journal

Known as Sycamore & Oak, the plan includes 288 multifamily units, 150 of them affordable; office; a hotel; retail; and a nearly two-acre public park. The District’s Historic Preservation Office is expected to review the proposal in April.

The Sycamore & Oak development team includes Redbrick LMD, Adjaye Associates, Hickok Cole, Studio Zewde and Emerson Collective. The latter is an impact investing and community engagement nonprofit founded by Laurene Powell Jobs.

Plans submitted for the District’s review represent a “preliminary, preliminary design,” Emerson Collective’s Dan Tangherlini told the Business Journal. Construction isn’t expected to begin for at least three years.
