News on the LMCMA renovation

$600 Million LACMA Renovation Paints a New Picture for Wilshire Blvd.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Modern Art (LACMA) has created a website to display its plans for a proposed $600 million building makeover. The plan, designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, would erect a 368,000 SF structure, called the LACMA Building for the Permanent Collection, across Wilshire Blvd.

If approved, the campus would extend, with its existing structure on one side of the street, while the museum-owned art would be housed in the new building on the south side of one of LA’s busiest boulevards. Additionally, the project plan calls for more than 2.5-acres of open space for plazas and sculpture gardens. And since it’s in Los Angeles, the plan would be remiss if it didn’t include a new parking garage as well.

Construction is slated to begin in 2018, with completion concurrent to the Wilshire/Fairfax Purple Line Metro Station, in 2023.
