53-Acre Irvine Sports Park Opens on Former Air Station Site
The first phase of a 175-acre sports park in Irvine, Calif., is now open. Developed through a public-private partnership between the city and FivePoint Communities Management Inc., Great Park Sports Park is built on the site of the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro.
At full build out, Sports Park will be twice the size of Disneyland. The first phase covers 53-acres, and the centerpiece is a state-of-the-art soccer stadium that accommodates 5,000 fans. In addition, the first phase includes 25 hard-surface tennis courts, six natural-turf soccer fields, five sand volleyball courts, and a one-acre playground.
“FivePoint made a commitment to help realize the vision of the Great Park, and enhance the lives of residents in Irvine and across Orange County…” said Emile Haddad, chairman and CEO of FivePoint.
The Sports Park represents roughly 25% of Orange County Great Park, which covers 688 acres. The FivePoint partnership is spending approximately $250 million to improve, operate and maintain its portion of Great Park, including infrastructure.
