Though a long time coming, federal funds, courtesy of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), should be coming to Texas counties hit hard by Hurricane Harvey. Officials should start to see the dollars flowing by the end of March 2018.

Hurricane Harvey roared ashore in August-September 2017, leaving catastrophic damages along the coast and in southeast Texas. The Lone Star State is in line to receive $5.5 billion, which will be distributed between 16 coastal and inland counties. Funding will be allocated through Community Development Block Grants (CDBGs), geared toward addressing unmet needs essential for long-term recovery in communities hit by disaster.

The Texas General Land Office (GLO) will administer the funds, with the lion’s share – 80% of it – headed to Harris County. HUD identified Houston and parts of southeast Texas as the “most impacted and distressed” area in the state.
