4th of July Travelers Drive to New Record

It’s going to be another record-breaking year for travel this Fourth of July holiday, with most travelers driving to their holiday destination.

According to AAA, more than 44 million Americans are expected to venture at least 50 miles away from home over the long holiday. That will make it the most traveled July 4th ever, an increase of 1.25-million travelers compared to last year.

An estimated 37.5 million Americans will hit the road, an increase of 2.9% from 2016. About 3.4 million will fly, while the remaining 3.3 million will use other forms of transportation including trains, buses, and cruises. The holiday weekend is defined as starting Friday, June 30 and ending Tuesday, July 4.

Fortunately for those who choose to drive, gas prices are very low at this time. As of June 27, AAA pegged the national average at $2.25 a gallon, and even California managed to stay below the $3 mark at $2.95.

Most popular destinations this summer? Orlando, FL is tops. Rounding out the top 10 are:

  • Vancouver, Canada
  • Cancun, Mexico
  • Seattle
  • Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
  • Honolulu, HI
  • Anaheim, CA
  • Anchorage, AK
  • Las Vegas, NV
