$4B Sherman Chip Fab Starts Production

GlobalWafers has started production at Phase II of its silicon wafer plant in Sherman, Texas, 60 miles north of Dallas. GlobalWafers’ first US plant, a 12-inch wafer fab opened in May 2025 and cost the company $3.5 billion to build. The latest plant will be $4 billion, a $7.5 billion investment in the area.

The Dallas Business Journal reports wafers produced at the facility will be used by companies such as Texas Instruments Inc. and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to make chips for Apple Inc.

GlobalWafers is set to receive up to $400 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce through the federal CHIPS and Science Act to build and expand facilities in Sherman.

At full buildout, the GlobalWafers complex in Sherman is expected to support about 1,500 jobs and produce up to 1.2 million wafers per month. The 142-acre site will be developed in six phases.
