$450M Hospital to Serve Growing Austin-SA Corridor

University Health is set to begin constructing a nearly 290-bed hospital in Selma, NE of San Antonio. The $450 million project will serve a growing population between San Antonio and Austin. The combined San Antonio and Austin metro areas are now home to just over 5 million people. That’s expected to grow to about 8.3 million people by 2050.

The hospital will connect to a new 1,000-square-foot medical office building, which is also planned for Lookout Road and Retama Parkway. University Health Retama Hospital will be a full-service facility offering advanced medical and specialty services. The five-story structure will initially open with 166 beds by early 2027.

The hospital has been designed so that it can easily be expanded to accommodate 286 beds. It will include a 24/7 emergency department, a labor and delivery unit, a neonatal intensive care unit and operating rooms, radiology, pharmacy, and lab facilities.

The new hospital is expected to create between 500 and 600 new jobs.
